Newsboys Acknowledge Past Rumors About Michael Tait Following Allegations

Following disturbing allegations brought to light last week, the Newsboys have broken their silence, acknowledging that they had "heard unsubstantiated rumors over the years" about former lead singer Michael Tait. The band issued a public statement on June 6 expressing devastation over the claims, which detail accusations of grooming, sexual assault, and substance abuse spanning from 2004 to 2014.
The exposé, published by The Roys Report on June 4, includes testimonies from three men-using the names Phillip, Steven, and Taylor-who allege that Tait engaged in non-consensual acts while they were incapacitated, often involving alcohol or cocaine. The report was compiled over months of investigation and includes interviews with more than 50 sources.
In their June 6 statement, the Newsboys expressed heartbreak over the revelations:
"Our hearts were shattered when Michael privately admitted earlier this year that he had been living a double life. While we had heard rumors in the past, we never imagined allegations this serious. We unequivocally condemn all forms of sexual abuse and are praying for those affected."
As the story continues to unfold, several regional Christian radio stations have responded swiftly. Stations including KJOL-FM (Colorado) and WLAB "Star 88.3" (Indiana) have announced a temporary suspension of all Newsboys music or limited rotation of songs featuring Tait's vocals. Major national networks such as K-LOVE and Air1 have not made public programming changes at this time.
The controversy has garnered widespread attention, with national media outlets such as Religion News Service, The Christian Post, and the New York Post covering the unfolding situation. Legal experts note that civil suits remain possible given the time frame of the alleged events and the states involved.
The band's touring future, label support, and digital platform presence are all under scrutiny as industry stakeholders await further developments. Capitol CMG/Universal Music Group, which controls the Newsboys' catalog, has not yet issued a public response.
For now, fans and radio programmers are grappling with how to responsibly engage with the band's legacy while advocating for truth, justice, and support for survivors. Many stations have directed listeners to resources such as the National Sexual Assault Hotline (800-656-HOPE) and local counseling centers.
This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as new information emerges.
