2014 Singapore Grand Prix-Formula One World Championship Results: Lewis Hamilton Wins, Nico Rosberg Retires
Lewis Hamilton, racing for the Mercedes AMG team, won the Singapore Grand Prix Formula One world championship held Sunday at the Marina Bay Street Circuit in Marina Bay, Singapore. It was his 29th grand prix victory. His race was officially timed at 2:00:04.795.
Following the victory, the 29-year-old British racing driver's father Anthony told the Guardian: "He's got a handle on the perspective of where he is. Win, lose or draw, it's Formula One, the greatest sport on the planet. Just don't take it too serious. He's very calm because he's enjoying it. When you come into Formula One you're only here for a period of time. Everything comes to those who wait. But you've got to enjoy it. He's loving it at the moment."
Hamilton now has 241 points at the Drivers' Championship standings, just three points ahead of Mercedes AMG teammate Nico Rosberg's 238 points.
The 29-year-old German Rosberg started the race with a 22 point lead over Hamilton but had to retire after only 14 laps because of repeated issues with his car's steering wheel. He told Sky Sports TV: "It was a horrible feeling really, to see everybody go. Because then I knew it was over. Then the whole steering wheel just wasn't working so I didn't have any hybrid power and the shifting. I would shift two gears at once all the time and I had no DRS. The car just wasn't working at all. And then there was no point to continue. It was a tough day really."
Placing second to Hamilton is 27-year-old Sebastian Vettel of the Red Bull-Renault team who timed at +13.534. Apparently, the German was surprised when Hamilton passed by him. He told the Guardian: "With the overtaking move I wasn't sure what he was doing. I gave him all the space to pass me on the inside of the next corner but it seemed he couldn't wait to get back in the lead. I had to back off and let him through. There was no point fighting."
Daniel Ricciardo also of Red Bull-Renault placed third, Fernando Alonso of Ferrari got fourth, and Felipe Massa of Williams-Mercedes was fifth in the just concluded race.
