Mel Gibson’s Resurrection To Hit Theaters In Two Parts On Good Friday And Ascension Day

Filmmaker Mel Gibson has officially announced that his long-awaited sequel to the groundbreaking 2004 film The Passion of the Christ will be released as a two-part cinematic event. Titled The Resurrection of the Christ, the films will chronicle the extraordinary events following the crucifixion of Jesus, exploring themes of redemption, victory, and the unseen spiritual realm.
The first installment will debut on Good Friday, March 26, 2027, while the second will premiere forty days later on Ascension Day, May 6, 2027. This release schedule mirrors the biblical timeline, immersing audiences in the spiritual journey from the resurrection to Christ's ascension.
Gibson promises that The Resurrection of the Christ will push storytelling boundaries with a sweeping narrative that spans from the fall of the angels to the death of the last apostle.
"This is not just a sequel-it's an exploration of mystery, faith, and the unseen forces at work during the most pivotal moment in history," says Gibson. "The scope of this story demanded two films, and we're excited to present it in a way that allows audiences to journey deeply with it."
The cast will see the return of Jim Caviezel as Jesus Christ, alongside Maia Morgenstern (Mary), Francesco De Vito (Peter), and other returning actors. The films are being produced by Icon Productions, with filming taking place at Cinecittà Studios in Rome and locations across southern Italy.
Gibson is an Academy Award®-winning filmmaker and actor known for his contributions to both mainstream and faith-based cinema. His 2004 release The Passion of the Christ grossed over $610 million worldwide, becoming one of the highest-grossing R-rated films of all time. With The Resurrection of the Christ, Gibson returns to the biblical narrative with an expanded vision that combines theological depth, dramatic storytelling, and cinematic artistry.
