The King of Pop is once again rewriting history. The highly anticipated Michael has exploded at the global box office, debuting to a staggering $217.4 million worldwide, officially marking the biggest opening weekend ever for a biopic.

The film pulled in $97 million domestically and $120.4 million internationally, blowing past long-standing records and redefining expectations for music biopics. The opening crushes the previous benchmark set by Straight Outta Compton, which earned $60.2 million domestically in 2015, and easily surpasses Bohemian Rhapsody, which debuted to $51 million.

Even beyond music biopics, Michael outpaces recent heavyweight entries in the genre, surpassing opening benchmarks set by Oppenheimer. Its $39.5-$41 million Friday haul now stands as the highest single opening day ever recorded for a biopic.

Driven by overwhelming fan demand, the film also crossed $100 million globally in a single day, including more than $40 million domestically, making it the largest opening day of 2026 so far.

Portraying the legendary Michael Jackson is his real-life nephew Jaafar Jackson, whose performance has been a major draw for audiences worldwide. Reacting to the film's record-breaking debut, Jaafar said, "Wow so incredible to see. The world has spoken and everyone is showing out. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I couldn't be happier and more grateful."

Despite carrying a $165-200 million production budget and receiving mixed critical reviews, the film's commercial dominance underscores the enduring global appeal of Michael Jackson's legacy and the power of audience-driven momentum.

Industry projections had already pointed to a strong debut, with estimates ranging between $65 million and $80 million domestically. However, Michael has exceeded even the most optimistic forecasts, cementing its place as a cultural and box office phenomenon.

With momentum continuing to build, Michael is not just a film release-it is a global event, proving that decades after his reign, the King of Pop still commands the world stage.
