The gospel music community is mourning the loss of Elder Goldwire McLendon, beloved minister, singer, and Sunday Best finalist, who has passed away at the age of 95.
Elder McLendon captured the hearts of millions during Season 3 (2010) of BET's hit gospel singing competition Sunday Best. At 79 years old, he became one of the oldest contestants in the show's history, defying expectations as he advanced all the way to the finals. His joyful spirit, commanding presence, and energetic performances made him a standout throughout the season. He ultimately finished as runner-up to winner Le'Andria Johnson.
Though he did not take home the title, Elder McLendon's journey did not end there. In a remarkable milestone, he received a record contract with Matthew Knowles at the age of 81, further cementing his extraordinary and unconventional musical legacy.
