Hobby Lobby founder and CEO David Green has pledged $7 million toward the rebuilding of First Baptist Dallas after a catastrophic 2024 fire destroyed the church's historic 134-year-old sanctuary, marking a significant milestone in the congregation's restoration efforts.
Originally announced as a matching gift, Green's pledge quickly became a full donation when a church family matched the amount overnight, immediately unlocking the entire $7 million commitment. The gift provides major momentum for the church's broader $95 million rebuilding campaign, which includes plans for a $27 million new sanctuary along with expanded ministry and gathering spaces.
Church leaders have emphasized a clear vision for the rebuilding process: to restore First Baptist Dallas debt-free while honoring the church's deep historical roots. Plans include preserving key architectural and spiritual elements of the original sanctuary, while incorporating modern safety standards, technology, and ministry-focused upgrades designed to serve future generations.
"This generous gift is a powerful testimony of faith, unity, and stewardship," church leaders shared, noting that the rapid matching response reflects the congregation's shared commitment to rebuilding not just a structure, but a spiritual home.
Founded in the late 19th century, First Baptist Dallas has long been a cornerstone of worship, outreach, and evangelical ministry in the city and beyond. The fire that destroyed the sanctuary was a significant loss to both the church and the wider Dallas community, making the rebuilding effort deeply symbolic.
Green, a longtime advocate for faith-based initiatives, has consistently supported Christian causes and institutions through philanthropy, education, and cultural preservation. His pledge underscores a broader commitment to strengthening churches and ministries across the country.
As rebuilding plans move forward, First Baptist Dallas leaders remain confident that the project will stand as a testimony to resilience, generosity, and God's provision-transforming tragedy into an opportunity for renewed mission and impact.
