"Make It Well" was born out of the band's long relationship with the beloved hymn "It Is Well." Lead singer Bart Millard explains that the song's roots reach into his own honest wrestling with faith in seasons of grief and hardship.
"The idea for 'Make It Well' actually came from wrestling with the hymn 'It Is Well'-which I have sung all my life," Millard said. "It's always during tragic times-funerals and moments like that-and I realized during those difficult moments that I'm kind of lying when I say, 'it is well with my soul,' because normally it isn't well with my soul. When you're in the middle of the struggle, it can be tough to sing that song and really mean it."
Millard shared that the turning point came when he imagined writing a response for those who cannot yet say "it is well," but who are learning to trust God in the ache.
"So I kept thinking if I were to write a song like that, I would change the lyric to 'make it well.' 'Make It Well' is for those like me who are still in the middle of the struggle-just trying to get by-and who know they are not going to get through it without the help of the Holy Spirit."
"Make It Well" offers a raw, compassionate, and deeply relatable anthem for listeners who are reaching for hope while navigating real pain.
