Alabaster Grace Unveils Majestic “High King of Heaven” Celebrating God’s Glory in Creation and Song

Q: What was the inspiration behind "High King of Heaven," and how did your personal faith journeys influence the songwriting process?

Music has always been a vital part of our lives, and it makes sense that music and prayer would fit together so perfectly. We have heard it said that music touches the heart in ways that words cannot.Most of the songs we have recorded come about as the result of quiet moments with God. For this particular song, we were outside marveling in the majesty of God's creation. The melody came for the chorus, and then everything else fell into place. This song is a prayer of praise to God for the majesty of who He is, and He turned it into a song.We consider each of our songs a masterpiece from heaven and feel compelled to share with the world so that people can be drawn closer to God. The songs are gifts from God, but even more, they are acts of worship to Him. "High King of Heaven" came about as the result of our giving praise and honor to God as the Creator and Savior of the world.

Q: Brad, as a former NASA rocket scientist, how does your understanding of astronomy and the universe shape the way you approach worship music and its message of God's majesty?

Through my work with NASA, including professional astronomy focusing on optical and infrared spectroscopy of stars, galaxies, and small solar system objects, I have gained a much better appreciation of the infiniteness of God's universe.  God's majesty as the Creator of everything in the universe, including each of us whom He created in His image with our own uniqueness, is present everywhere. Today, we understand that the universe is not only infinite in size but is expanding at an accelerating rate. Wow, what an awesome God we have!In approaching our music, I like to focus on God's majesty as seen through His creation. God has given us His two books - the Bible and His book of nature - and He desires for each of us to have a deep, faith-based relationship with Him through studying His Word and appreciating His creation.

Q: Joanie, as the primary songwriter and lead vocalist, how do you craft lyrics that resonate both personally and for congregational worship?

God has been gracious in giving me songs that come directly from Him. Many times, I have been awakened in the middle of the night with a new song that I know is not of my own doing. When this happens, I immediately get up, go to a quiet corner, and start writing down what I am hearing. Sometimes, I only hear the chorus at first, but then everything else comes like a flood. I hear the instruments playing, like a heavenly band, and the harmonies are beautiful. Interestingly, I do not hear the guitar part, as God gives that to Brad.Each song is unique, and I hold them as treasures in my heart because they are gifts from God. I knew immediately that "High King of Heaven" was meant to be shared with as many people as possible so that God's children could sing this song as a gift of worship to Him.

Q: Working with Chris Bevins and an impressive team of Nashville session players, how did collaboration shape the final sound and arrangement of the song?

We love working with Chris! We first met him in 2020 through an introduction from our dear friend, Mike Smith. Immediately, we felt a connection and knew that God had something special in mind for us working together. Chris is exceptionally talented and very humble, even with multiple Dove Awards.Chris is an awesome producer and additionally brings his tremendous musical talent to each song. When we send him the demo recording and vision for a new song, he listens and shares his ideas. In every song, our collaboration yields a beautiful product, and the song's essence is conveyed superbly. Additionally, we are truly honored by the amazing talent of the Nashville session players that Chris includes in our songs.

Q: Your music and ministry often explore the intersection of faith and science. How do you see "High King of Heaven" reflecting that connection?

Alabaster Grace Ministries is increasingly focusing on the relationship between faith and science. God, speaking through the prophet Isaiah, states, "Come now, let us reason together" (Isaiah 1:18, ESV). God expects us to worship Him with all our full capability, including our ability to think and reason. He has given us great intellectual ability to probe and understand portions of His creation so that we can better appreciate Him as our Creator God who is more infinite than His creation. We read in the Bible's opening verse that God existed before His creation: "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1, ESV)."High King of Heaven" connects God's presence in His natural book, Creation, with His Word, the Bible. In this song, we acknowledge that there is no one else who is like Him or who is worthy.  God is not only the King of the Universe, but He is also the Savior of our souls.

Q: What do you hope listeners and congregations take away when they sing or hear "High King of Heaven" in both personal devotion and corporate worship settings?

"High King of Heaven" is a song of praise to our Creator God. It is meant to be sung in intimate settings, as well as in corporate worship. This song's purpose is to bring the listener closer to the heart of God in worship and devotion. God is worthy of praise, and when believers worship together, it is a powerful experience. Who knows, maybe one day we will all be singing "High King of Heaven" together in heaven!
