Whitney and Cissy Houston Honored with Gospel Music Hall of Fame Inductions

The Gospel Music Association proudly announces the induction of music legends Whitney Houston and Cissy Houston into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, celebrating their extraordinary impact on gospel music across generations.
Whitney Houston, one of the best-selling music artists of all time, was posthumously honored in the 2025 class of inductees. Though widely known for her pop and R&B success, Houston's gospel roots ran deep-from her upbringing in the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark to her powerful renditions of spirituals throughout her career. Her iconic gospel performances on The Preacher's Wife soundtrack-now the best-selling gospel album of all time-continue to inspire millions. This induction recognizes Whitney's lifelong connection to gospel music and the spiritual foundation that shaped her voice and her legacy.
Her mother, Cissy Houston, was inducted into the International Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1999, honoring a career that has spanned more than five decades. A Grammy-winning artist, Cissy Houston began her journey as a member of The Drinkard Singers and later formed The Sweet Inspirations, singing backup for icons such as Elvis Presley and Aretha Franklin. She later became a celebrated solo gospel artist and served as music director at New Hope Baptist Church, nurturing countless voices-including her daughter's.
"The Houston legacy is one of deep spiritual conviction, unmatched vocal talent, and unwavering dedication to the message of gospel music," said Jackie Patillo, President of the Gospel Music Association. "It is only fitting that both Whitney and Cissy Houston be recognized for the ways they've brought gospel music into the hearts and homes of people across the world."
The 2025 Gospel Music Hall of Fame ceremony took place in Nashville and featured musical tributes from leading gospel artists, remembering the Houstons' profound influence on the genre.
