Are Our Governments Going Too Far With Surveillance Programs: UN Warns The Government About Pushing The Limits Too Far When It Comes To Surveillance Programs

Over the years surveillance cameras have been seen as a sense of security by people all over the world. Governments have been using surveillance cameras to track down criminals and also keep an eye on their countries by making sure that their people are safe. They have also come in handy in investigations where the authorities need to review on what happened in a crime scene. Well this is the most positive side of surveillance. However, it seem like most governments are no longer using them for this purpose only anymore.

According a report by Navi Pillay the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, it says that too many government are rubber-stamping mass surveillance programs. It is also disturbing that very little is known about the growing number of the many surveillance programs. The report also suggested that a lot needs to be done so as to ensure that surveillance was balanced against its harm to personal privacy.  

Now as much as surveillance technology helps in keeping people safe Navi Pillay feels that there should be a limit to how this technology can be used. She also says in her report that a law should be outlined on how surveillance should be used by the government. Ms. Pillay says "Mass surveillance was becoming a dangerous habit rather than an exceptional measure". She says that the programs interfere with the people's privacy and that the government should do more in making sure that this form of lack of privacy is neither arbitrary nor unlawful.

The report said that measures that force net companies and mobile operators to retain data on what people do online and whom they talk to had a little justification however the more data the governments take from their people the more they will need to justify why they are doing so and that this was indeed bridging people's privacy.
