Taize Releases "Music of Unity and Peace"

taize

Taizé  is an unique ecumenical monastic order. On March 17, the monastic order will release a collection of the most beautiful chants and songs of their community performed by the Brothers themselves.  The songs are a hand-picked by a choir of young visitors on their annual pilgrimage.

The Taizé community comprises about 100 brothers, who come from Catholic and Protestant backgrounds in 30 different nations. In over 75 years, Taizé - based in Burgundy, France - has grown as a place of retreat and an increasingly popular pilgrimage destination, especially for young adults. Hundreds of thousands of young people from all over the world travel to Taizé each year to make music with the Brothers, pray, study and enjoy the community.

Music written especially for Taize plays a central role in the life of the community; songs are sung in many languages, so as to include people and traditions worldwide. At the very heart of this beautiful music is simplicity, repetition and congregation. It is music to enjoy and share, but also to sing to, and meditate to. It transcends religion, and has hypnotic, relaxing and reflective qualities that can speak to a wide and non-religious audience.

The music has proved an amazingly effective tool, as one of Taizé's young visitors, a girl from the Netherlands, confirms: "If you sing together and you can just concentrate on the singing, you get peace in your head. And that's a nice feeling."

The album, from Deutsche Grammophon, marks the very first collaboration of this world-renowned Christian community with a major label, and is set for release ahead of the special double anniversary year in 2015: the centenary of Taizé's founder, Brother Roger, and the 75th anniversary of the community itself.
