Outlander Season 2 Renewed, To Be Based On 'Dragonfly in Amber' With 13 Episodes
Fresh from its highly impressive mark at its debut episode last Saturday, Outlander is confirmed for season 2, as announced officially from the premium cable network Starz.
It's definitely a incredible feat for the new television series to be renewed this early, only after airing one episode to date out of its initial plan of 16 episodes. With the pilot episode garnering over 5 million views from multiplatform viewing, it's no suprise that Starz and program creator Ronald Moore have decided to go on with season 2, having been a triumph with both critics and viewers.
The new season will return for at least 13 episodes and will be based on the second installment Dragonfly in Amber of the eight-book historical novel series by American author Diana Gabaldon. Published in 1991, it tackles the time-traveling journey of Claire Randall, a WWII army nurse who strangely transports back to 18th century Scotland; and gets herself entangled in all kinds of adventures and her romantic attachment to Scottish warrior Jamie Fraser. The book series have sold over 20 million copies worldwide.
Outlander is also already gaining a following among women particularly with its strong, self-assured, smart, spirited and modern female protagonist Claire. Even author Diana Gabaldon confides that she created Claire as she doesn't like stupid, victimized and uncertain kinds of women.
The current season is being split in two, the first eight episodes will air until September 27 and the second eight to air early next year.
The series stars Caitriona Balfe (Claire), Sam Heughan (Jamie), Tobias Menzies (Black Jack Randall/Frank Randall), Gary Lewis (Colum MacKenzie), Graham McTavish (Dougal MacKenzie), Duncan Lacroix (Murtagh Fitzgibbons) and Lotte Verbeek (Geillis Duncan).
Will Outlander continue its impressive start and be Starz' great aggressive bet against HBO and Showtime in the awards season and critics buzz? Outlander airs Saturdays, 9p on Starz.
