He was invisible in Game 1. Then he showed up in Game 2 and made history.

Cristiano Ronaldo needed just six minutes to answer his doubters. Deep inside Uzbekistan's penalty area, the 41-year-old struck a powerful right-footed volley into the net - becoming the first player in history, man or woman, to score in six different World Cup tournaments.

He pulled out his trademark "Siu" celebration and let out a roar in front of 68,777 fans at NRG Stadium in Houston. Portugal never looked back, cruising to a 5-0 final.

Ronaldo added a second in the 39th minute, finishing off a brilliant through-ball from former Manchester United teammate Bruno Fernandes.

It was his 145th international goal for Portugal and his 10th at the World Cup, surpassing the legendary Eusébio as Portugal's all-time leading scorer in the competition.

Walking back to the dugout at full time, Ronaldo looked directly into the camera and said it plainly: "I'm back." His Instagram post seconds later said the rest - "ESTAMOS AQUI" - Portuguese for "We are here."

The comeback was personal. After a toothless opening draw with DR Congo, critics were calling for his head while Messi, Mbappé, and Haaland were already lighting up the tournament.

Ronaldo acknowledged it had been a "dark week" - but said one thing anchored him through it: "I know that whoever works hard, God helps him."

Reflecting after the final whistle, he added: "The most important thing is the work the team did, the trust we had. We took a lot of beatings during the week, we knew this was going to happen, but the team worked well, we improved a lot."

Portugal's next match is Saturday against Colombia - a game that will decide who tops Group K.

At 41, with ten World Cup goals and a record no one else in history holds, Cristiano Ronaldo is still running. And apparently, still praying.
