The search for Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, continues to develop - with several new threads now in motion heading into the case's fifth month.
Mexico Search Resumes
Volunteer search teams have expanded operations into parts of Mexico, including the Mariposa region near Nogales, following an anonymous tip suggesting a possible location near streams in the area. This follows the two earlier searches in May and June 10 that turned up nothing connected to Guthrie, though 25 unrelated unmarked graves were found in the broader region. Buscando Corazones Nogales has said they are not giving up.
CertiK Designates Case a "Wrench Attack"
CertiK, a cybersecurity firm valued at $2 billion, publicly labeled Nancy Guthrie's disappearance a "wrench attack" - a targeted crime in which physical force or kidnapping is used to gain access to a victim's digital assets, in this case a reported $6 million Bitcoin ransom demand. Former FBI agent Coffindaffer called the designation a "huge breakthrough," noting that CertiK would not have made the distinction publicly without seeing compelling evidence.
Trial Date: June 23
A man named Callella, who sent ransom-related messages to the Guthrie family claiming knowledge of Nancy's location, faces trial at the federal courthouse in Tucson on June 23. His messages had asked whether the family had received Bitcoin. He has stated he pulled their information from a "cyber website."
Savannah Away From Today
Savannah Guthrie was absent from Today on June 17, with Sheinelle Jones filling in. Savannah returned to the show in April after an extended leave of absence following her mother's disappearance on February 1.
The family's $1 million reward and the FBI's $100,000 reward for information remain active. Anyone with information is urged to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or Tucson's 88-Crime tip line at 520-882-7463.
