She just announced 10 concerts in Paris. The Eiffel Tower lit up for her birthday. The world lost it. But how well do you really know Céline Dion? Here are 14 facts that will make you see her story completely differently.
1. She was literally named after a song. Dion was named after "Céline," a song that French singer Hugues Aufray had recorded two years before her birth. Her name was her destiny before she could even speak.
2. She is the youngest of 14 children. Born on March 30, 1968, in Charlemagne, Quebec, she grew up as the youngest of 14 children in a modest household where music was everywhere. Her mom once had to lay her youngest baby to sleep in a drawer - the house was that packed.
3. She wrote her first song at 12. It paid off immediately. At age 12, Dion collaborated with her mother and brother Jacques to compose her first song, "Ce n'était qu'un rêve" ("It Was Only a Dream"). Her brother sent the recording to music manager René Angélil, whose name he discovered on the back of an album. Angélil was moved to tears by Dion's voice and decided to make her a star.
4. Her manager mortgaged his house - for her. In 1981, René Angélil mortgaged his own home to fund her first record, "La voix du bon Dieu" ("The Voice of the Good God"), which became a local number-one hit and made Dion an instant star in Quebec. He later became her husband.
5. She won Eurovision - for Switzerland. She's Canadian. Dion was launched onto the global stage in 1988 representing Switzerland at the Eurovision Song Contest in Dublin, where she sang "Ne partez pas sans moi" (Don't Leave Without Me) and won the prize. A French-Canadian woman. Representing Switzerland. In Ireland. And winning. Only Céline.
6. She had to go completely silent to save her voice. In 1989, during a concert tour, Dion injured her voice. A specialist gave her an ultimatum: have surgery on her vocal cords, or not use them at all for three weeks. She chose the latter - and was told she "doesn't know singing, she made bad use of her vocal cords." She retrained from scratch and came back stronger.
7. She sang "Beauty and the Beast" at the Oscars on her own birthday. On March 30, 1992 - her 24th birthday - Céline sang "Beauty and the Beast" with Peabo Bryson during the Oscars broadcast. The song went on to win both a Grammy and an Academy Award.
8. She once co-owned a nightclub with Shaquille O'Neal. She co-owned a Las Vegas nightclub called Pure alongside tennis legends Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf, and basketball great Shaquille O'Neal. She also owned a golf club, a restaurant chain, a perfume line, and a legendary Montreal deli - Schwartz's.
9. Her Las Vegas residency made history and billions. Dion is popularly referred to as the "Queen of Las Vegas" for her impact on the city. She signed a $100 million contract for her first residency - considered one of the most lucrative in touring industry history. Her career total from concert revenue crossed $1.1 billion, making her one of a handful of artists to ever reach that threshold.
10. She held a bronze replica of her husband's hand before every show. Two years after René Angélil's death in 2016, Dion still held a bronze replica of his hand before each and every live performance. He passed from throat cancer. Just two days later, she also lost her brother Daniel to cancer.
11. A source once told CNN she would "likely never tour again." After her Stiff Person Syndrome diagnosis, a source close to her told CNN she would "likely never tour again." She just announced 10 concerts in Paris. Never count Céline out.
12. She showed up at the 2024 Grammys when almost no one expected it. Despite reports that she had lost control of her muscles, Dion made a surprise appearance at the Grammy Awards in February 2024, presenting the Album of the Year award to Taylor Swift - walking out to a standing ovation that left the entire room in tears.
13. She's now on TikTok - and fully owns it. Earlier this year, Dion refreshed her TikTok presence, leaning fully into her icon status. "My team then said they'd handle everything, handed me back my phone, and then quietly disappeared. So here I am, learning how this TikTok world works... one video at a time!" she wrote.
14. Paris has always been her stage - and she chose it to rise again. From winning Eurovision in the late '80s to singing Édith Piaf from the Eiffel Tower at the 2024 Olympics, Paris has been the backdrop of Céline's most defining moments. She has sold more than 260 million albums and won five Grammy Awards - but it is in Paris, this fall, that she writes the final chapter of her comeback story.
For a woman of deep faith in love, in family, and in the resilience of the human spirit, this is not just a concert tour. It's proof that when you refuse to give up, even the Eiffel Tower lights up for you.
