One week after a tense moment at the BAFTA Awards made international headlines, the narrative surrounding Sinners stars Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo took a dramatically different turn.

At the 57th NAACP Image Awards, held February 28 at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium and broadcast live on BET and CBS, Jordan and Lindo were met with a powerful standing ovation - a moment that quickly became one of the most talked-about highlights of the night.

The applause wasn't prompted by a win. It wasn't tied to a category. It was simply a gesture of public support.

And it was unmistakable.

A Shift in the Conversation

As previously reported in our coverage of the BAFTA incident, an outburst during the London ceremony - broadcast during a tape-delayed airing - sparked widespread reaction and debate. The moment overshadowed what should have been a celebratory appearance for the Sinners cast.

But at the NAACP Image Awards, the atmosphere was entirely different.

While presenting early in the ceremony, Regina Hall paused and addressed the audience:

"Let's take a moment for the two kings who are in this audience."

She gestured toward Jordan and Lindo seated inside the auditorium. The room immediately rose to its feet.

The ovation was loud. Sustained. Intentional.

It marked a clear turning point from controversy to affirmation.

Delroy Lindo Speaks Out

Later in the ceremony, Delroy Lindo took the stage alongside Sinners director Ryan Coogler. Before presenting their award, Lindo addressed the previous week directly.

"I'd just like to officially say, we appreciate - I appreciate - we appreciate all the support and the love that we have been shown in the aftermath of what happened last weekend," Lindo said. "It means a lot to us."

He described the situation as "a classic case of something that could be very negative becoming very positive."

Coogler echoed the sentiment, speaking about the significance of being in a room centered on Black storytelling.

"There's something powerful about standing in this room - a room where we don't have to explain ourselves," Coogler said. "Our stories aren't footnotes. They're the main text."

Lindo added, "A room where being fully seen is not rare - it is expected."

The message was clear: the NAACP Image Awards provided not just recognition, but belonging.

Michael B. Jordan Wins Entertainer of the Year

Beyond the emotional ovation, the night was also a major professional triumph for Jordan.

At the 2026 NAACP Image Awards, he won:

  • Entertainer of the Year

  • Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture for Sinners

The film itself dominated the ceremony, winning Outstanding Motion Picture and multiple additional honors across categories.

During his acceptance speech for Outstanding Actor, Jordan dedicated the award to his late Black Panther co-star Chadwick Boseman.

"Our time on this planet is short," Jordan reflected. "I was watching the 'In Memoriam' and seeing how fast these careers go by... I just want to be here and be present with you guys as much as possible."

Later in the evening, while accepting Entertainer of the Year, he declared proudly: "Man, I love being Black."

The line drew cheers and quickly circulated across social media.

Community Over Controversy

Award shows often amplify headlines - but they can also reshape them.

What began as a difficult week for the Sinners cast became, at the NAACP Image Awards, a moment of unity and strength. The standing ovation wasn't just applause; it was a collective statement of solidarity.

In a cultural climate where viral moments can divide and inflame, the NAACP Awards offered something different: affirmation, dignity, and communal support.

For many viewers, especially within faith-centered communities, the shift from controversy to encouragement echoes a deeper truth - that even public challenges can be met with grace, resilience, and restoration when a community chooses to respond with love instead of outrage.

The Michael B. Jordan NAACP Awards moment will likely be remembered not for the controversy that preceded it, but for the powerful response that followed.
