The fundraiser supporting James Van Der Beek's family has now surpassed $2 million - and one of Hollywood's most legendary directors is among the latest major donors.
Steven Spielberg and his wife, Kate Capshaw, have contributed $25,000 to the GoFundMe campaign established to support Van Der Beek's widow, Kimberly, and their six children following the actor's passing from stage three colorectal cancer at age 48.
For longtime Dawson's Creek fans, the gesture carries special meaning. Van Der Beek famously portrayed Dawson Leery, an aspiring filmmaker who often cited Spielberg as his cinematic hero throughout the show's six-season run from 1998 to 2003. Last September, Spielberg made a virtual appearance at a reunion event supporting F Cancer and Van Der Beek, telling the beloved character, "Dawson, you made it."
But Spielberg is not the only major name stepping forward.
Skincare brand Caldera Lab currently stands as the top donor with a $50,000 contribution. Guardant Health has also donated $25,000, matching Spielberg's gift. Actress Zoe Saldaña pledged $2,500 monthly, while filmmaker Jon M. Chu contributed $10,000.
Originally set with a $1.5 million goal, the fundraiser has now exceeded $2.2 million. According to organizers, the funds will help cover essential living expenses, bills, and the children's education following the significant financial strain caused by Van Der Beek's medical care.
Friends of the family recently described the outpouring of support as "a light" during a deeply painful season of grief, thanking donors for their generosity and asking for continued prayers and privacy as the family mourns.
As tributes continue to pour in, the widespread support - from Hollywood icons to corporate donors and fans - reflects the lasting impact Van Der Beek made both on and off screen.
