Hillsong Church Goes Online in the Wake of the Coronavirus Outbreak

Due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, Hillsong Church is taking precautions by moving all their services across all campuses online. As of next Sunday, there will no longer be anymore physical gatherings of the church.

Hillsong Church's senior global pastor Brian Houston told parishioners via video message that "this will be the last weekend that we will be able to gather in full. Next week, we are going to be meeting online," he said.

"Because we want what is best for you and we also want to be compliant with all the health and government authorities. Next week we will be beaming online - so we are still gathering, we are gathering online."

Not every Hillsong service has an attendance of over 500 people - but the all the campuses will follow this policy of only online gathering on Sunday. "So next week church is on," Pastor Peter Toganivalu added. "That's because church is not a building. It's you."

The Australian government ban on large gatherings will take effect from today. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Friday announced that all non-essential large gatherings will be suspended from Monday. Churches were advised to consider holding extra services to keep numbers under 500.

Hillsong Church was founded by Brian and Bobbie Houston in 1983 in the western suburbs of Sydney, Australia. Now, Hillsong has churches in city centres in 28 countries around the world. The church has an average global attendance of 150,000 weekly.
