Among the long list of English classics that were on some reading list or another at one point in time I the book Far from the Madding Crowd but Thomas Hardy. This was his fourth novel and it marked the beginning his literary success. During his lifetime that lasted from 1840 to 1928 wrote 18 novels and over 40 short stories. He is considered to be one of the greatest writers of the Victorian period.

The book tells of five people whose lives are intertwined and centers on a young gentleman Gabriel Oak who is in love with Bathseba Everdene. It opens with Gabriel who is a shepherd and has leased a flock of sheep. He lives a frugal but comfortable life and gets attracted to Bathseba whom he tries to court. Bathseba is interested in his advances but not enough to accept his marriage proposal. Bathseba moves away and Gabriel loses all his sheep over a cliff thanks to an inexperienced sheep dog. Ruined by this he pays his debts with what little money he had saved up but roams the countryside seeking employment. One day on this quest he spots a burning house and goes to help people put it out. He finds out that the house belongs to none other than Bathseba who hires him to look after his flock. Bathseba has now attracted two suitors: William Boldwood and Seargent Troy. Much to Gabriel's chagrin she marries Troy who winds up dead after a series of unfortunate events. She then winds up marrying Gabriele quietly.

The movie is set to be released on May 1st 2015 and is directed by Thomas Vinterberg for DNA Films and Fox Searchlight Pictures. The film was shot in Dorset, Oxfordhire, Buckinghamshire and London. Carey Mulligan, Mathias Schoenaerts, Michael Sheen and Juno Temple are set to take up the roles of Bathseba, Gabriel, Boldwood and Troy respectively.
