Richie's recent health concerns have repeatedly affected his concert schedule. In June, he experienced dizziness during a show in St. Paul, Minnesota, and later postponed performances. After a concert in St. Louis on August 29, he was hospitalized for precautionary cardiac testing. He subsequently returned to Los Angeles, but the latest heart procedure has brought another pause in his tour with Earth, Wind & Fire.
The tour has canceled its upcoming stops in San Francisco, Chicago and Columbus. Richie's representative has expressed confidence that he will return to the stage, but has not announced a date for his next performance. His appearance at Bryan's show was by video screen, so it should not be taken as a sign that he has already resumed live concerts.
The Idol announcement nevertheless answers another question fans had been asking: whether Richie would remain on the judging panel. He and Bryan have been part of ABC's version of the show since its 2018 revival. Underwood, who first became known to Idol audiences when she won the competition in 2005, completes the returning trio. Their familiar chemistry will be back for Season 25, while Seacrest continues as host.
