Pastor Bill Johnson is officially back-and he did not return to Bethel Church alone. The 75-year-old senior leader received a joyful welcome Sunday as he returned from his sabbatical accompanied by his new wife, Linda Francoeur Johnson, marking the beginning of an emotional new chapter for the prominent Redding, California, congregation.
Bethel celebrated Linda's arrival in Redding and publicly welcomed her into the church family. "We love you both, and we are so excited for this new season as newlyweds," the church declared. Johnson and Francoeur married in a private ceremony on August 18, one month after he proposed during his 75th birthday celebration. The marriage came four years after Johnson lost his first wife, Beni Johnson, following her battle with cancer.
Johnson previously made it clear that Linda was not entering his life to replace Beni, with whom he shared more than four decades of marriage. "Beni took her shoes with her, and Linda has her own shoes to fill," he explained while announcing the relationship. He has described Linda as a woman of deep compassion, wisdom and discernment who has become a great source of strength to him.
Yet Johnson's highly anticipated return was about more than newlywed congratulations. Looking toward Bethel's future, the pastor invited the congregation to renew its covenant and remember the spiritual identity that has shaped the controversial and influential charismatic church: courage, community and a willingness to take risks in response to God's voice.
"We are believing for God to do something in our lifetime that we have never heard of before; we have never seen," Johnson told the congregation. "It's on the pages of Scripture, but we've never tasted it for ourselves."
Bethel responded by reaffirming its commitment to pursue God's promises with the conviction that nothing is impossible with Him. "We are courageous. We are risk takers for the glory of God," the church declared, signaling that Johnson's return-and his new marriage-may represent the start of a significant new season for both the pastor and the ministry he has led since 1996.
Johnson's first Sunday back therefore carried two celebrations: a church welcoming its longtime pastor home and a congregation preparing to embrace his new wife as part of the Bethel family. After a season marked by grief, transition and rest, Johnson returned with a deeply personal testimony of new beginnings and an ambitious spiritual challenge for the church's future.
