A retired FBI special agent is publicly criticizing the Pima County Sheriff's Department over its search of the Sonoran Desert surrounding Nancy Guthrie's Tucson-area home, as the case investigating the disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of "Today" co-anchor Savannah Guthrie passes the seven-month mark.

Retired Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer posted on social media August 19, questioning why Sheriff Chris Nanos allegedly halted broader search efforts and declined outside volunteer help. "Why does law enforcement refuse to search the Sonoran Desert near Nancy's house?" she wrote, calling the terrain an ideal location for concealing evidence.

The renewed criticism follows the discovery of human remains roughly 15 miles from Guthrie's home near West Ajo Way and South La Cholla Boulevard. The sheriff's department said the remains appeared to have been there "for an extended period" and showed "no indication at this time" of any connection to Guthrie's disappearance.

Some of Coffindaffer's specific claims have since been disputed by independent fact-checkers, including her assertion that searches effectively stopped after the investigation's second day; reporting from February shows FBI agents and deputies conducting desert searches as late as February 11, involving several hundred personnel.

Guthrie was last seen at her Catalina Foothills home the night of January 31 and was reported missing after failing to appear for a Sunday church livestream she never missed. No suspect has been publicly named, and a reward exceeding $1 million remains active.

Through every twist in the investigation, the Guthrie family has continued to lean on faith, asking the public to keep Nancy in prayer as the search presses on. "Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning" (Psalm 30:5) - a hope this family continues to hold onto, seven months in.
