Shelly White, wife of longtime Earth, Wind & Fire bassist Verdine White, shared a closer look at Paris's condition in a Facebook post on Thursday, August 13. Doctors had placed Paris, 58, into an induced coma after he was rushed to the hospital following a cardiac incident backstage on August 6, just before the band was set to perform alongside Lionel Richie in San Francisco.
During a brief window, Paris opened his eyes and looked around the room, quietly asking, "Where's Kathy?" When he found his wife, Kathy Merrick, relief spread through the room. He then turned to his close friend Eddie M, who has visited daily, with a flash of familiar humor: "Get me outta here man!"
Shelly described the moment as filled with "tears, laughter, hugs, and renewed hope." But it didn't last. Paris's blood pressure soon began climbing and he developed trouble breathing, prompting doctors to sedate him again so his body could stabilize. He has since shown slight responses to music played in his hospital room, according to updates shared by his supporters.
A GoFundMe has been set up to help cover medical expenses for Paris and Merrick, and several of his Earth, Wind & Fire bandmates - including saxophonist Gary Bias and keyboardist Myron McKinley - have already donated. "John's journey is far from over," Shelly wrote, asking supporters to continue holding him and his family close.
Paris has held the drum chair for Earth, Wind & Fire since 2001, and his absence has been deeply felt by a musical family that has now become a literal one at his bedside.
