Pastor Sarah Jakes Roberts is back in the pulpit - and after what she has been through, simply seeing her standing there carried a message all its own.
Roberts returned to preach at The Potter's House Dallas on Sunday, marking a significant comeback following the frightening trampoline accident that she previously revealed nearly left her paralyzed.
The accident happened on April 18 while Roberts was playing on a trampoline with her daughter, Ella. Roberts said she landed on her neck and immediately heard several "pops." After being rushed for medical attention and undergoing scans, doctors discovered that she had fractured her neck, suffered herniated discs and endangered areas of her spine.
At the time, Roberts revealed just how close the accident came to having a dramatically different outcome, explaining that a slightly different injury location could have resulted in paralysis. She was subsequently placed in a neck brace and initially expected to spend four to six weeks recovering.
Now, months after that terrifying ordeal, Roberts has made her way back to the pulpit.
During her return message, the co-senior pastor reportedly thanked those who encouraged and supported her throughout the recovery process. She also spoke candidly about the emotional side of the journey, including dealing with depression and stress while her body healed.
And one of the biggest themes of her message? Surviving what tried to take you out.
Drawing upon Isaiah 54:17, Roberts reminded listeners that Scripture doesn't promise weapons will never be formed against believers - the promise is that those weapons will not ultimately prosper.
She also offered a powerful perspective on testimony: sometimes there doesn't need to be a spectacular ending or perfectly packaged victory story. Sometimes the fact that a person is still standing after everything they have endured is itself the testimony.
That message carries particular weight given what Roberts has faced since April.
The accident was serious enough that The Potter's House publicly confirmed that Roberts had suffered fractures in her neck along with spinal impact and would be stepping back while recovering under medical supervision.
Roberts currently leads The Potter's House alongside her husband, Pastor Touré Roberts. The couple became the Dallas megachurch's co-senior pastors following the leadership transition initiated by Roberts' father and church founder, Bishop T.D. Jakes. The church currently identifies Sarah and Touré Roberts as its co-senior pastors.
