Mike Posner is opening up about a dramatic new chapter in his life - and it is a long way from the world he once described in his smash hit "I Took a Pill in Ibiza."
The Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter, best known for "Cooler Than Me" and "I Took a Pill in Ibiza," has revealed that he gave his life to Jesus Christ a year ago and was baptized several weeks ago.
Posner shared the deeply personal news on Instagram, posting footage of himself being baptized outdoors in calm waters at sunset. The 38-year-old singer explained that his journey toward Christianity began after several unusual experiences that he interpreted as invitations to move closer to Christ.
"A year ago, I got down on my knees and gave my life to Christ," Posner revealed.
According to the singer, his conversion followed what he described as a series of "Christ-based synchronistic events." In one instance, a friend apparently spoke accurately about events in Posner's life without knowing about them beforehand. During a small church gathering, Posner also experienced what he described as electricity moving through his spine, accompanied by an intense feeling of unity.
Another Christian friend later mentioned something from Posner's past that the singer said he had been thinking about only moments earlier.
Rather than trying to prove whether the experiences were supernatural, Posner said what mattered most was where they ultimately led him.
"I interpreted [these] signs as signals for me to take a step towards Christ," he explained. "I did so."
After surrendering his life to Christ, Posner began digging deeper into Christianity, reading the New Testament as well as works by influential Christian figures including C.S. Lewis and Mother Teresa.
His journey, however, has apparently involved plenty of questions.
Posner admitted that he initially struggled with what being a Christian actually meant and said some teachings he encountered in church resonated with him while others did not. Over time, however, his understanding of Christianity increasingly centered on following the example of Jesus.
"For ME; To be a Christian means to aspire with all your mind, body, and soul to live as Christ did," he wrote.
For Posner, that includes forgiveness, compassion and extending love toward others, particularly those who are overlooked or marginalized. He summarized his developing faith with the declaration: "LOVE CHRIST BY LOVING PEOPLE."
The singer also acknowledged that living according to Christ's example presents an impossibly high standard without God's help.
Several weeks ago, Posner took another public step in his faith journey by being baptized. Video from the occasion shows him emerging from the water before raising his hands toward the sky.
"Christ has not made my life or my heart smaller, but much, much bigger," Posner shared. "I'm working on developing more and more of a personal relationship with God."
Posner was also careful not to present himself as a theologian or tell his fans what they should believe. Instead, he said keeping quiet about such a significant change in his life would feel dishonest.
"But to not share this would feel inauthentic and like I was hiding a part of myself from my audience," he explained. "I am not hiding this part of my life. But I am proud of this part of my life."
The announcement represents a striking turn for an artist whose biggest song became synonymous with the emptiness that can accompany fame, partying and celebrity culture.
"I Took a Pill in Ibiza" famously begins with Posner recounting taking a drug in Ibiza in an attempt to impress the late DJ Avicii. Beneath its infectious production, however, the song was always surprisingly bleak, depicting a successful artist discovering that fame had failed to deliver the fulfillment he expected.
Posner has increasingly distanced himself from that former life.
In 2019, he embarked on an extraordinary walk across the United States, surviving a rattlesnake bite along the way. He later climbed Mount Everest. Posner has described such experiences as part of a broader transformation that forced him out of comfort and helped him become a more authentic version of himself.
Then, on the 10th anniversary of writing "I Took a Pill in Ibiza" in 2024, Posner revealed that the song no longer represented the man he had become.
He said he was no longer chasing validation through drugs, possessions or unhealthy relationships and described himself as "a completely new man."
That transformation has since taken an explicitly Christian direction.
Posner previously revealed that his "relationship with God is on a whole new level," and earlier this year he unveiled rewritten lyrics to "I Took a Pill in Ibiza" that dramatically recast the story.
Instead of opening with "I took a pill in Ibiza," the new version begins, "I went back to Ibiza." The updated lyrics also reference being 10 years sober, leaving Los Angeles, wanting to start a family and ultimately deciding to give his life to God.
Now, his baptism puts a striking visual exclamation point on that transformation.
The artist who once sang about taking a pill in Ibiza to impress someone else is publicly telling his millions of followers that he has found something very different to live for: Jesus Christ.
