Bon Jovi fans got an unexpected twist during the band's Madison Square Garden residency after Jon Bon Jovi was forced to cut Thursday night's (July 23) concert short because of illness.
The legendary frontman revealed to the crowd that he had been battling a sinus infection, bringing the show to an early close after around 90 minutes. While fans were understandably disappointed, Bon Jovi assured the audience he has no intention of leaving them empty-handed.
"Don't throw away your ticket stubs," he told the crowd. "I'm going to figure something out. Just hang onto it."
The emotional moment came as the Rock & Roll Hall of Famers were nearing the end of their eighth show in a nine-night Madison Square Garden residency-one of the most anticipated rock events of the year.
Despite feeling unwell, Bon Jovi still managed to deliver a packed set featuring many of the band's biggest hits. The night also included a surprise appearance from Train frontman Pat Monahan, who joined the band for a crowd-pleasing rendition of the classic anthem "Livin' On a Prayer."
A representative for the band later confirmed that Jon had been struggling with a sinus infection throughout the performance.
"Jon Bon Jovi spoke from stage and told fans he has been battling a sinus infection which led to the show's early ending," the spokesperson said. "As part of the Bon Jovi residency at Madison Square Garden, Jon has said numerous times that it has been a joy to return to live shows for the band. Updated information will be available shortly."
Before leaving the stage, the singer reassured worried fans that he expects to recover quickly.
"I'm gonna have to cool it for a night," he said. "I feel great. I'll see you again soon. Bye bye."
The health setback comes after an already remarkable comeback for the 64-year-old rocker. Bon Jovi only recently returned to touring following reconstructive vocal cord surgery and years of rehabilitation, a recovery journey he has spoken about openly.
For years, the singer refused to return to the road until he was confident he could perform a full concert at the standard fans expect.
"Nothing else matters until I work on getting better," he previously said. "I won't fake it...the legacy matters too much."
That determination made the Forever Tour one of the year's biggest comeback stories, making Thursday night's interruption all the more heartbreaking for longtime fans.
The band's Madison Square Garden residency is still scheduled to conclude on Sunday before Bon Jovi heads overseas for a string of stadium concerts across Scotland, Ireland and England, including three massive nights at London's Wembley Stadium.
Fans are now eagerly awaiting an update on whether the remaining New York performances will proceed as planned-and whether Bon Jovi will make good on his promise to make things right for those whose night ended earlier than expected.
