The Christian music world is grieving together after beloved worship leader and songwriter Brian Doerksen passed away on July 21 at the age of 60, with many of the biggest names in worship music sharing emotional messages honoring the man whose songs shaped generations of believers.
Doerksen, the Canadian worship pioneer behind timeless anthems including Come, Now Is the Time to Worship, Refiner's Fire, Faithful One, Light the Fire Again, and Hope of the Nations, died peacefully at his family home after battling cancer. His family said he spent his final moments surrounded by loved ones and remained grateful and encouraging until the very end.
Within hours of the announcement, Christian artists from around the world filled the family's social media page with heartfelt tributes.
Leading the outpouring was Paul Baloche, a longtime friend and fellow songwriter, who remembered years of friendship, writing songs together at Doerksen's Shining Rose studio, sharing meals around the family table, and touring together across Canada.
"You taught me much about lament through your words, your songs, and your life," Baloche wrote. "Thank you for Refiner's Fire, Light the Fire Again, and a hundred more songs that pointed us all to Jesus. Until we meet again."
Australian worship leader Darlene Zschech described Doerksen as "a hero of the faith."
"So sad to wake up to this news," she wrote. "Praying over your families... and so grateful to all of them for sharing you with us all."
Matt Redman admitted he was "deeply gutted" by the news, revealing that Faithful One remains his all-time favorite worship song.
"He wrote so many other songs I loved," Redman said. "He was always such an encouragement to me personally. Brian, you'll be deeply missed, but your legacy runs long."
Jenn Johnson of Bethel Music kept her tribute simple but heartfelt, writing, "What a special man. Love you Doerksen family."
Contemporary Christian artist Brandon Heath remembered the lasting impression Doerksen made on him.
"I met Brian years ago and he left quite an impression on me. What a soul."
British singer-songwriter Philippa Hanna echoed the hope of the gospel while mourning his passing.
"The world has lost a light and Jesus has gained a faithful servant," she wrote.
Worship leader Pat Barrett simply posted, "Brian ❤️," while Ben Fielding, co-writer of What a Beautiful Name, thanked Doerksen for "all of the songs, the ministry and example," calling him "a hero and an inspiration."
Singer-songwriter Aaron Williams offered the brief but powerful words, "Well done Brian," echoing Christ's promise to faithful servants.
Aaron Shust reflected on Doerksen's lifelong influence on the Church.
"I'm so grateful for Brian's example and leadership in this life," Shust wrote. "He led us to worship The Greatest Treasure."
Dutch worship leader Alie Davandijk honored Doerksen by posting the complete chorus of his beloved classic Faithful One, allowing the songwriter's own words to become her tribute.
Music executive Al Gordon remembered Doerksen's character as much as his music.
"Oh Brian! Such a sweet man, kind, humble, and with a twinkle in his eye," Gordon wrote. "He was such an inspiration."
The Worship Leaders Collective also paid tribute, writing, "What a gift, what a legacy," while praying for God's grace, peace, and comfort over the Doerksen family.
The overwhelming response reflects the extraordinary reach of Doerksen's ministry. For more than three decades, his songs have been sung in churches across denominational lines and around the world.
