Gospel music icon Fred Hammond has officially joined the ranks of artists featured on NPR's wildly popular Tiny Desk series, and fans are already calling it one of the most powerful gospel performances of the year.

Released on June 23 as part of a special collaboration between NPR Music and BET celebrating Black Music Month, Hammond's highly anticipated Tiny Desk Concert showcases the legendary singer performing some of the songs that helped define modern gospel music.

From the opening notes, Hammond delivered the kind of intimate yet powerful performance fans have come to expect from the gospel pioneer. The setlist included beloved classics such as No Weapon, Jesus Be a Fence, and You Are the Living Word-songs that have become staples in churches around the world.

What made the performance even more special was the all-star band and vocal ensemble assembled behind him. Hammond was joined by accomplished musicians Asaph Ward, Phillip Feaster, Stephen Bruton, and Morgan Turner on keys, while Lacy Comer handled drums. Background vocals were provided by Gary Edwards, Rachael Hammond, BreeAnn Hammond, and Marcus McFarlin, creating the rich harmonies that have long been a hallmark of Hammond's music.

Fans flooded social media shortly after the performance premiered, praising the live arrangements, vocal excellence, and the spiritual atmosphere captured within the intimate Tiny Desk setting.

For many gospel music lovers, the concert feels long overdue. Hammond's influence spans decades, with his work as a solo artist and as a member of Commissioned helping shape contemporary gospel music for generations.

Now, thanks to NPR's Tiny Desk platform, a new audience is getting a front-row seat to one of gospel music's most influential voices.
