Pro-democracy activist, media founder, and Christian convert Jimmy Lai has been sentenced to 20 years in prison under Hong Kong's national security law, a ruling that has sparked global condemnation and renewed calls for prayer, religious freedom, and the protection of conscience.

Lai, the 78-year-old founder of the now-defunct pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily, was convicted on charges related to collusion with foreign forces and the publication of so-called seditious materials. Supporters and international observers argue the sentence effectively amounts to a life term and represents the most severe punishment yet imposed on a journalist under the security law.

Beyond his role as a media executive, Lai has long been outspoken about his Christian faith, which he credits as central to his moral convictions and perseverance during years of detention. A Catholic convert, Lai has repeatedly stated that his commitment to truth, freedom of expression, and human dignity flows directly from his belief in God and the teachings of Jesus Christ.

"Freedom is not merely political," Lai has previously said. "It is rooted in conscience." Friends and faith leaders say his calm demeanor throughout the trial reflected a man sustained by prayer and a deep trust in God's sovereignty, even as legal options narrowed.

Human rights groups, church leaders, and democratic governments around the world have condemned the ruling, warning that it signals a near-total erosion of press freedom and religious liberty in Hong Kong. Several Christian organizations have described Lai as a modern-day prisoner of conscience, urging believers globally to pray for his protection, health, and spiritual strength.

The case has also reignited concern for journalists and faith-inspired activists who operate under increasing restrictions. Critics say the prosecution of Lai demonstrates how national security frameworks are being used to silence dissenting voices, including those motivated by religious and moral conviction.

Despite the severity of the sentence, Lai's supporters emphasize that his witness extends beyond the courtroom. "They can imprison the body," one advocate said, "but they cannot imprison faith, truth, or the gospel."

As Jimmy Lai begins what may be the longest chapter of his confinement, churches and advocacy groups worldwide are calling for continued prayer, international pressure, and renewed commitment to defending freedom of belief, freedom of the press, and the dignity of all people made in the image of God.
