Former NFL linebacker Darron Lee, who was on the Kansas City Chiefs' Super Bowl LIV roster in 2020, has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of his girlfriend in Tennessee, authorities confirmed.
The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office in Ooltewah, Tennessee, said deputies were called to a residence on February 5 for a report of CPR in progress. First responders found a woman who later died, and investigators quickly ruled her death a homicide. Lee, 31, was taken into custody at the scene and now faces charges of first-degree murder and tampering with evidence.
Lee, selected 20th overall by the New York Jets in the 2016 NFL Draft, played three seasons for the Jets before brief stints with the Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills. He was on the Chiefs roster during their Super Bowl LIV championship season but was inactive for the game itself.
According to law enforcement, Lee's court date in Hamilton County is set for February 11. The identity of the victim has not been released pending family notifications.
This case also revisits Lee's previous legal issues, including a 2023 arrest on domestic violence charges - a history noted by multiple media outlets.
While the details continue to unfold, the situation has prompted reflection among many on how fame and athletic success don't shield individuals from personal struggles. In moments like this, some faith communities stress the importance of grace, accountability, and seeking support before tragedy strikes - even for public figures whose lives once seemed defined by triumph.
As the legal process continues, more information may emerge following upcoming court proceedings.
