Joe Nichols Reveals Former Label Rejected His Faith-Filled Song “We All Carry Something” for Mentioning Jesus

Multi-platinum country artist Joe Nichols is opening up about a pivotal moment in his career when faith and artistry collided. In a recent interview with Taste of Country, Nichols shared that his song "We All Carry Something" was rejected by his former record label because it referenced Jesus by name.
Originally recorded during his tenure with Red Bow Records, the heartfelt ballad was ultimately released on Nichols' 2017 album Never Gets Old. Yet, according to Nichols, the song's journey to release was far from easy.
"The label told me, 'We love this song, but we'd like you to change the last verse,'" Nichols revealed. "They said, 'Can you make it a little more generic-take the Jesus part out?' I said, 'Absolutely not.' I would rather die a bloody death than do something like that."
"We All Carry Something" weaves together portraits of ordinary people carrying the weight of their struggles-a baby born addicted, a boy growing up in hardship-and resolves with a powerful, redemptive image of Christ's sacrifice:
"And the last payoff verse was about Jesus ... He carried that cross through those city streets for us. We all carry something. He carried it all."
Nichols said the song reflects his desire to share hope and truth through his music, even if that means facing pushback in a mainstream industry that can be hesitant toward explicit expressions of faith.
"That song meant a lot to me because it's true," Nichols said. "We all have burdens, but Jesus carried the ultimate one. To change that line would've been to change the meaning entirely."
Though the song was never released as a radio single, "We All Carry Something" has become a favorite among fans who appreciate Nichols' unwavering commitment to authenticity and conviction. The track has also become a touchstone for conversations about how faith fits within modern country music.
Now, years later, Nichols sees that difficult moment as a defining chapter in his journey - one that reaffirmed his calling to stand firm in his beliefs.
"At the end of the day," Nichols reflected, "I want to be able to look at what I've done and say I told the truth. Whether it's on the radio or not, that's what matters to me."
Nichols, known for timeless hits like "Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off," "Brokenheartsville," and "Sunny and 75," continues to tour and record new music, often blending traditional country storytelling with his deep Christian faith.
"We All Carry Something" is available now on Joe Nichols' album Never Gets Old, streaming on all major platforms.
