A devastating explosion has destroyed Abundant Life Fellowship Church in Boonville, leaving five people injured and the congregation without its longtime place of worship.
The explosion occurred Tuesday morning after reports of a gas odor inside the building. Emergency crews responded to the scene, and while firefighters and church leaders were investigating the source, a catastrophic blast tore through the structure, causing extensive damage and leveling much of the church facility.
Among those injured was the church's pastor, Brandon Pitts, along with four firefighters who had entered the building to assess the situation. All were transported to local hospitals for treatment. Authorities later indicated that the injuries, while serious, were not believed to be life-threatening.
Preliminary investigations suggest the explosion may have been linked to a propane leak, potentially caused by structural strain from heavy snow accumulation on the roof. Officials have stated there is currently no indication of foul play, and the incident is being treated as an accident pending further review.
The church building has been declared a total loss.
