'CitizenFour' News, Updates, Release Date, Review : A Snowden Revelation

Roman Poet Juvenal's "Quis custodiet ipsos custodes" is the Latin phrase that best describes the latest documentary called "CitizenFour".  Documentarist Laura Poitras, the first journalist contacted by Edward Snowden, reveals the events that took place in a Hong Kong hotel in June 2013. CIA Senior Analyst and NSA contractor Edward Snowden divulges classified files proving the hidden work of US government agencies.

Their ability to covertly accumulate information from people of interests using emails, social media sites or any electronic sources which boils down to the long-standing argument between national security and invasion to privacy.

"CitizenFour" documentary will show Snowden answering questions one after another from Ewen MacAskill, correspondent working for The Guardian Intelligence, Author and Journalist Glenn Greenwald and Poitras herself.  Snowden simply answered all their questions leaving the decision on what to broadcast to the three journalists. The documentary may also be considered Snowden's vindication. Not knowing his real motive, people labeled Snowden as a Russian spy.  But from the point of view of Poitras, after talking to Snowden for eight days, the documentarist believe that Snowden is just human , sincere and just trying to do the right thing.

At the height of the controversy, Snowden, fully aware about the consequences of his actions, decided to stop communication with his girlfriend Lindsay Mills who is residing in Hawaii. The decision was for her protection. However, the lovers reunited in Russia where Snowden is residing by invitation from Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The documentary, considered an excellent journalism work, is an eye-opener to philosophical, ethical and political concerns. Concerns like internet self-restrictions; the government complicity with corporations; and the capability of US agencies to eavesdrop or deter any communication of citizens all over the world. Tapping the cellphone of German Chancellor Angela Merkel is just one proof.

It took Laura Poitras 16 months to put the documentary together and putting the NSA under public scrutiny. A scrutiny that Roman Poet Juvenal wrote about in his book called Satire ... "Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?" or simply "Who will guard the guards?"

"CitizenFour" documentary is a 114 minutes of serious revelations that happened in hotel rooms, courthouses and offices. Dirk Wilutzky, Mathilde Bonnefey and Laura Poitras produced the film under Praxis Films. To be shown on October 24, 2014.
