Multi-GRAMMY® Award-winning duo FOR KING + COUNTRY are opening up about a pivotal turning point in their story-one they describe as a "God moment" that reshaped their lives and set the trajectory for their global music ministry.
In a new feature with ChurchLeaders, brothers Joel and Luke Smallbone reflected on a formative season from their teenage years that now defines the heart of their new documentary, FOR KING + COUNTRY: No Turning Back, released November 23 via Wonder Project on Prime Video.
The story begins not onstage but on the football field. During the first game of his junior year, Luke tore his ACL-an injury that abruptly ended his sports ambitions. What felt like devastation for a young athlete became, in hindsight, divine redirection.
"That injury is what created so much empathy in me," Joel shared. "I didn't realize until later that God was using that painful moment to open a path for us-to push us toward music, toward each other, and toward the calling we didn't yet see."
The brothers credit that difficult detour as the catalyst that brought them into the studio, onto the stage, and eventually toward the mission that defines their work today.
No Turning Back offers an intimate look at their early struggles-failed starts, industry rejection, financial hardship, and personal health battles-all held together by a persistent sense that God was weaving purpose through every setback. From mowing lawns and loading gear to headlining arenas worldwide, the film traces how small beginnings, family resilience, and unwavering faith formed the backbone of their rise.
"We wanted people to see that the story behind the music is not glamorous," Luke explained. "It's honest, it's gritty, and it's filled with God's grace in the middle of things we didn't understand at the time."
The documentary also highlights how that formative "God moment" continues to shape the duo's passion for crafting songs that speak to hope, perseverance, and divine purpose-messages that have resonated with millions across the globe.
